What is the Zaydi view of wiping over the leather socks?

The School of Ahl al-Bayt denies the validity of wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn). This is an issue of consensus amongst them. Imam ash-Shawkâni narrated in his Nayl al-Awŧâr:

All of the Prophet’s Progeny, the Imamites, the Kharijites, and Abu Bakr bin Dâwud az-Žâhiri hold that the wiping [over the leather socks] is not permissible in washing the feet.

We also have statements from individual imams from the Ahl al-Bayt, upon them be peace, that invalidate the wiping over the leather socks.

I.                     Amîr al-Muminîn, Imam ‘Ali bin Abi Tâlib, upon him be peace:

1.        Imam Zayd bin Ali narrated on the authority of his ancestors—Ali said: ((The Book [i.e. Qur’ân] supersedes wiping the leather socks)).

2.        Imam Zayd bin Ali narrated on the authority of his ancestors—Ali said: ((The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his progeny, used to wipe over the leather socks before the revelation of Sūra al-Mâ`ida (Q. 5) After the verse in al-Mâ`ida was revealed, he stopped wiping over the leather socks)).

II.                   Imam al-Hussein bin ‘Ali bin Abi Tâlib, upon them be peace:

1.        Imam Zayd bin Ali narrated on the authority of his father—his grandfather, al-Hussein bin ‘Ali said: ((Verily, the children of Fâtima do not wipe over the leather socks, turbans…etc.))

III.                 Imam Zayd bin ‘Ali bin al-Hussein bin ‘Ali bin Abi Tâlib, upon them be peace:

1.        Ash-Sharîf al-Hasani narrated in his Tasmiyya with a chain of narrators going to Naŝr al-Bâriqi: “I asked Zayd bin ‘Ali regarding wiping over the leather socks, and he said: ((We, the Ahl al-Bayt, do not wipe. Our ancestors did not wipe. I have not seen anyone from the Ahl al-Bayt wipe over the leather socks, ever)).”

2.        Abu Khâlid al-Wâsiti said in Musnad Imam Zayd that when he asked Zayd bin ‘Ali if it is permissible to pray behind one who wiped over the leather socks, Imam Zayd said: ((It is not permissible)). When Abu Khâlid asked if one didn’t know if the prayer leader washed his feet or wiped [i.e. over the khuffs] can he pray behind him. Imam Zayd said: ((It is preferable to me that one not pray behind him)).

IV.                 Imam Muhammad bin Ja’far bin Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Hussein bin ‘Ali bin Abi Tâlib, Imam al-Hasan bin Ali bin al-Hasan bin al-Hasan bin al-Hasan bin ‘Ali bin Abi Tâlib, and Imam al-Hussein bin Zayd bin ‘Ali bin al-Hussein bin ‘Ali bin Abi Tâlib, upon them be peace:

1.        Hâfiz Muhammad bin Sulaymân al-Kūfi narrated on the authority of Ahmed bin ‘Isa bin Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Umar bin Ali bin Abi Tâlib that the aforementioned imams said: ((The children of Fâtima are in consensual agreement regarding the recitation of Bismillah ar-Rahmân ar-Rahîm aloud, the avoidance of wiping over the leather socks…))

V.                   Imam al-Qâsim bin Ibrâhîm bin Ismâ’îl bin Ibrâhîm bin al-Hasan bin al-Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Tâlib, upon them be peace:

1.        Ash-Sharîf al-Hasani narrated that Imam al-Qâsim ar-Rassi, upon him be peace, said: ((The Progeny of the Messenger, peace be upon him and his progeny, are in consensual agreement concerning the avoidance of wiping over the leather socks)).

VI.                 Imam Yahya bin al-Hussein bin al-Qâsim bin Ibrâhîm bin Ismâ’îl bin Ibrâhîm bin al-Hasan bin al-Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Tâlib, upon them be peace:

1.        Imam al-Hâdi ila al-Haqq Yahya bin al-Hussein, upon him be peace, said in his al-Ahkâm regarding the wiping over the leather socks and other clothing during the ritual ablution: ((The Progeny of Allah’s Messenger, peace be upon him and his progeny, are in consensual agreement that one does not wipe over any of these. If anyone was to wipe over any of these, his ablution will be invalid. There is no prayer except by means of ritual ablution…It is prohibited to wipe over the leather socks)).

VII.               Imam al-Hasan bin ‘Ali bin al-Hasan bin ‘Ali bin Umar bin ‘Ali bin al-Hussein bin ‘Ali bin Abi Tâlib, upon them be peace:

1.        Imam Nâsir al-‘Utrūsh al-Hasan bin Ali, upon him be peace, said in Al-Ihtisâb: ((It is upon the one accountable to take the flag of Ahl al-Bayt…and they prohibit one from wiping over the leather socks…))
