As far as we know and from what I read in the Lawami' al-Anwar, the reason that the Rawaafidh rejected Imam Zayd (as) was because he was not Imam as-Saadiq (as) whom they believed was the rightful imam of the time. This is in more accord with their theology because they believe that only the rightful imam (from amongst the 12) could lead them in a jihad and subsequently establish an Imamate. As far as their rejection of him because he didnt curse the "two shaykhs," this is not mentioned in the early Zaydi authorities (as far as I know). This argument could be used to reject those imams prior to Imam Zayd (as) because we do not have any instance where Imams Ali, Hasan, Hussein, Zayn al-Abideen, etc had to openly curse the "two shaykhs."
