As salamu 'alaykum !

Can you give me a brief biography of Sayyiduna Hasan al-Muthanna (as) please ?

I have also some question about him (as) :
  • Was he an Imam ?
  • Is he the Imam between the death of Imam Al Husayn (as) and the proclamation of Imam Zayd (as) ?
  • What is his role during the revolt of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad (ra) ?

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahma!

Thank you for your question! As for Imam al-Hasan bin al-Hasan (as), he is considered an imam as he called for support and received the pledge of allegiance. He was born around 90 or 97 AH. He fought as a cavalryman with his uncle Imam al-Hussein (as) while in his twenties. He is said to have suffered 18 wounds as a result. He was so afflicted that he fell in the middle of the battlefield and had to be carried by his maternal uncle Usama b. Khaaraja. He returned him to Kufa and nursed his wounds. He remained there three months before returning to Madina. He married the daughter of his uncle Imam al-Hussein (as) Faatima who gave birth to his sons Abdullah, Ibrahim, al-Hasan, Zeynab and Umm al-Kulthuum. Imam al-Hussein (as) himself married al-Hasan al-Muthanna to his daughter.

As for the pledge of allegiance, Abdur-Rahmaan bin Muhammad and those with him gave the pledge to him. He was also said to have received the pledge from the scholars of Kufa and Basra, including the likes of Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Layla, Abul-Bahturi at-Tai, ash-Shu'bi, Abu Wa'il ash-Shaqiiq, Muhammad bin Siriin, Abdur-Rahman bin Shukhair, al-Hasan al-Basri and others. They named him al-Hasan bin al-Hasan ar-Rida.

The imam was finally poisoned at the age of 38 or 39 on the orders of al-Walid bin Abdul-Malik and was buried in Baqi'a cemetery in Madina. He (as) was imam between Imams al-Hussein (as) and Zayd (as). There is also an opinion that İmam Zayn al-Abideen (as) was also an imam during this time.

And Allah knows best!

Replied by Yahya on topic Imam Hasan al-Muthanna (as)
Thank you very much may Allah bless you !

I often read that the Imams (as) were poisoned, how it went ? They were forced to swallow the poison or it was by the cunning from enemies ?

And for the opinion that Imam Zayn al-Abideen (as) was an Imam, does that mean that there are some texts which indicate that he would be proclaimed himself as an Imam ?

Thank you for your question! Sorry for the delay in responding!

The imams were typically poisoned by the hand of a close associate or intimate. For example, Imam al-Hasan (as) was poisoned by oneof his wives, Ju'da bint Ashath, by the order of Mu'awiyah.

As for the imamate of Zayn al-Abideen (as) some of our imams and scholars hold that he proclaimed the imamate for himself after the death of his father (as).

And Allah knows best!
