Question: It is narrated in Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Saheeh Muslim, Sunan at-Tirmidhi and Musnad Ahmed that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, said: ((The people of Paradise will enter it, and the people of Hellfire will enter the Hellfire. Then death will come in the form of a ram and it will be slaughtered on the Siraat. Then, it will be said: “Remain and don’t die”)). Is this hadith authentic?

Answer: Imam Murtaza Muhammad bin Yahya al-Haadi, upon them be peace, replied to this question. He replied:

This hadith is not authentically attributed to Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. This is because the hadith is not true. It is only from some of the common folk and ignorant. We have heard that from them. Death is simply the name of the departure of the souls and the cessation of movement. Whoever says that death will be slaughtered is ignorant.

He goes on to say:

If death were slaughtered, that would necessitate that death itself dies. This is the statement that no one would make except an ignorant person. Rather Allah—Glorified be He—has conveyed to us of the eternality of the afterlife when He says: {They will not taste death therein except the first death} (Q. 44:56).

And Allah knows best!
