Thank you for your question! We plan to write a more detailed article on this issue in the near future, inshaAllah.
As you know, our imams and scholars differ regarding the hukm of raising the hands at the beginning of the prayer. Those who hold to the view that the hands are not raised use various proofs to support their view:
1. None of the proponents of raising the hands say that it is wajib. This is significant because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, said in a universally accepted hadith: ((Pray the way you see me pray)). This means that everything he did in the prayer which was visible is compulsory. Anything that the scholars consider sunnah means that there is insufficient proof that the Prophet did it consistently. Otherwise, it would be wajib. Therefore, it cannot be considered reliable that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, raised his hands in the prayer.
2. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, said in a universally accepted hadith: ((Why are you raising your hands like the tails of intense horses? Be settled in your prayers)). He is reported to have said this when he saw a group of companions raising their hands in the prayer. It cannot be argued that he only prevented them from this during the sitting because he said ((Be settled in your prayers)). This is general and absolute, and it means that the hands are not to be raised in any part of the prayer.
3. In a hadith where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, verbally described the prayer, he did not mention raising the hands at the beginning. The report is as follows:
It is related from Abu Hurayra, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entered the mosque and a man entered and prayed. He greeted the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who returned the greeting and said, ((Go and back and pray. You have not prayed.)) He went back and prayed as he had prayed before. Then he came and greeted the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said three times, ((Go back and pray for you have not prayed.)) He said, ‘By the One who sent you with the truth, I cannot do any better than that, so teach me.’ He said, ((When you stand for the prayer, say the takbir and then recite something you know well from the Qur’an and then do ruku’ until you are at rest in your ruku’ . Then stand back up until you are completely upright. Then go into sajda until you are at rest in your sajda. Then sit back until you are at rest in the sitting position. Do that throughout all of your prayer.))”
Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
In this report, there is no mention of raising the hands. This is a proof because the neglect of mentioning raising the hands demonstrates that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, did not advocate for it. if it was a part of the prayer, he would have mentioned it. Raising the hands cannot be inferred because it is not a natural action one does. Also, it cannot be said that he only mentioned the wajib parts of the prayer because the ahkaam of 'wajib' and 'sunnah' parts of the prayer were later developed by jurists and scholars, not the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny.
4. Those reports that mention that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, raised his hands are declared weak or abrogated. The scholars of hadith have scrutinised many of these reports and the contradictions and inconsistencies in them should be enough to prove that they are not sufficient as proof.
And Allah knows best!
