السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

There is a hadith where Jibreel (عليه السلام) descends to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and teaches him the prayer times which is found in Majmu' al-Imam Zayd (عليه السلام), al-Muntakhab of al-Imam al-Hadi ila al-Haqq (عليه السلام), al-Jami' al-Kafi, and other hadith books, and is accepted by all sects of Islam, which states that the time for Maghrib starts at the time when the sun sets. How is this hadith reconciled with the view that Maghrib starts when the first star appears in the sky?

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

Thank you for your question! As for the hadith of Jibreel (as) and the time for maghrib as we mentioned, there is no conflict. When mentioning the maghrib prayer, the Jibreel hadith in the Majmu' Imam Zayd uses the phrase "...when the disc (qurs) falls..." or "...sets..." This does not contradict that a star must be seen because when the disc of the sun has completely set and darkness begins to spread, one can see a star. Also, the same hadith in the Al-Muntakhab uses the phrase "...when the faster breaks the fast" to refer to the time of maghrib. This does not conflict with the view that a star must be seen because we say that the fast cannot be broken until the night, which is manifested by the sighting of a night star.

This is easily reconciled with the Qur'anic verse and those traditions in which the night was said to be indicated by the sighting of the star. Look at the explicitness of the hadith on the authority of Abu Basra al-Ghifaari when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, said: ((And no prayer is valid after it [after 'asr] until the witness (ash-shaahid) appears.)) By 'witness,' the evening star (najm) is meant. This tradition is coupled with a parallel tradition on the authorities of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Ibn Abbas in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, said: ((...and no prayer is valid after 'asr until the sun sets)). It is clear that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, considered the sighting of a star the indicator of sunset.

And Allah knows best!
