Assalamu alaikum !
It is said in Mukhtasar Ul Mufid : " It is religiously obligatory that the husband provides adequate support (an-nafaqa) for the wife, as well as conventional clothing and good treatment. "
Can you teach me what it is considered as " adequate support " and " conventional clothing " ?
Thank you !
wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi!
Thank you for your question! According to one of our fiqh commentaries At-Taaj al-Mudhhab, adequate support refers to that which is sufficient for need. In the case of food, it is enough food that she can eat until she is satiated. Included in that are things such as fruit, coffee and condiments which make the food more pleasing to her and that she is used to from her culture. This would also include buying medicine and treatment for her.
One is also to provide soap and oil or any other type of skin lubricants for her. One is obligated to provide enough water for her to drink and clean her clothes and body with. One must also provide a bed or sleeping cushion. One must also provide a servant for her if she needs it due to sickness. As for the clothing, one is to provide comfortable clothes for her that are suitable for the seasons; however one is not obligated to provide a prayer garment for her. The general rule for provisions and support is necessity and comfort, not beauty.
And Allah knows best!
