Salaamu Alaikum,

I am wondering what is the correct procedure to perform the janazaah funeral prayer.  I am wondering what the positions of the madhhab of ahlulbayt are, regarding the number of takbirs, the raising of the hands, etc.

Many thanks. Jazakallah.

wa alaikum salam wa rahmatullah,

It is stated in al-Azhar:

Its obligatory elements are:

the intention
five takbīrs (saying “Allāhu Akbar”)
standing
and the final salām.

It is recommended after the first takbīr to recite al-Ḥamd (Sūrat al-Fātiḥa),
after the second al-Ṣamad (Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ),
after the third al-Falaq (Sūrat al-Falaq),
and after the fourth to send blessings upon the Prophet and his family, and to supplicate for the deceased according to his state.

The prayer should be said quietly, and the son is given precedence over the father (in leading it).

One prayer is sufficient for multiple funerals, with a renewed intention of including each one that arrives during it.

If another funeral arrives after one takbīr, it is completed with six takbīrs.

Addendum:

As for the raising of the Hands, there is some discussion about that, some of the Aimma -alayhim as-salam- recommended to do it at the takbirah al-iftitah (opening takbir) and that is the later view of Imam al-Hadi -alayhi as-salam-. It is not allowed outside of the opening takbir. If you raise it, you have to raise it to the height of your ears.

wa salam
