Fatwa : Ruling On Gelatin

Question:
Sir, may Allah protect you. What is the ruling on gelatin found in many candy products, where I have found in some references that it is extracted from the skin of pigs or the hooves of cows and sheep, and some plants, although some companies specify that it is bovine or vegetarian gelatin? It may also be labeled as just gelatin or animal based, and the manufacturing is usually external.

Answer:
The impure becomes pure through transformation (Istihalah). So, if what you mentioned undergoes a transformation and becomes something else, it becomes pure. This is similar to the transformation of a dog's carcass into dust, or wine into vinegar, or feces into salt, and so on.
