Fatwa : Ruling on Flags and Banners

Q : A questioner from the United States asks: What is the ruling on flags and banners in the Zaydi school of thought? Is it permissible for us to carry flags or banners other than the flag of the Shahada (declaration of faith), such as local, national, company, or organizational flags?

A : A flag that indicates its bearers belong to a deviant ideology or support a non-Muslim party, or anything similar, is not permissible. However, a flag that indicates affiliation with a country or neighborhood is permissible.
