Fatwa : Using the Kunya of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him

Q : Is it permissible for a man who is not from the Hashemite family to take the kunya “Abu al-Qasim” even though his name is Muhammad?

A : It is permissible. And if the hadith that forbids taking the kunya “Abu al-Qasim” is authentic, then it only applies during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, so that there would be no confusion or misunderstanding.
