Hello and salaam!
Some tafsir argue the meaning of the word in Surah al-Imran 3:55 is to “seize a person's soul”, which represents a figurative, rather than a literal meaning. Others like ibn Kathir say that waffa is used in this verse an illusion of sleep, that Isa, peace be upon him, was raised up in a sleep. How do Zaydis interpret the Quranic verse in Surah al-Imran 3:55? Are there differing opinions in the Zaydi tradition or is there a consensus upon the meaning?
Thank you

Salaams!
Thank you for your question! As for an interpretation of Q. 3:55, Imam Rassi (as) in one of his replies, says that the verse is understood to mean 'taken in death' as it is used in Q. 5:117 by the Mu'talzilites. He also said that their opponents say that it means that 'Isa, upon him be peace, was physically taken by Allah to answer the charge that his enemies killed and crucified him, upon him be peace. The imam does not seemingly favour any interpretation and therefore leaves it open for one to interpret it in any way one wants.
Sayyid Imam Nasir Fath ad-Daylami (as) did not address this specifically in his tafseer of the verse in his Al-Burhaan. The late Sayyid Badrudeen al-Houthi (ra) said in his tafseer that the meaning of the verb in Q. 3:55 is similar to the meaning of the verb in Q. 39:42, which means to take the soul in death.
And Allah knows best!
