Did Ayesha Prevent the Burial of Imam Hassan (as)

In Maqatil al Talibeen there are two views.
One says she prevented Imam Hassan from being buried beside the Prophet (pbuh). The other says she was not responsible, and only stopped it when there was danger from the Ummawis. What is the Zaidi view on this?

Thank you for your question!

According to one of our historical sources Al-Masaabeeh fi Seera, she did prevent the burial of Imam Hasan (as) next to Rasulullah, salla allahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam. Imam al-Hasan (as) was aware of the animosity because he instructed his brother al-Hussein (as) in his wasiya:

If I am prevented from being buried next to the Prophet, salla allahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam, then bury me in al-Baqi' next to my mother Faatima. There is something in the soul of the daughter of Abu Bakr.

The same source says that she told Muhammad bin Hanifiya when he came to bury his brother:

I didn't invite you to bury him here!

Imam al-Hussein (as) responded:

What is this?! Why do you have this opposition against us?! We are the house of Allah's Messenger! Had it not been for the bequest of al-Hasan, you would see the result of your evil!

Ibn Abbas commented:

One day she was on a camel and another day she was on a mule (baghal). I feared that the day would be known as the Day of the Mule just as it was the Day of the Camel.

Sayyid majideen says in his Lawaami' al-Anwar that it is narrated that she prevented the burial and it is also narrated that she didn't. He concludes

And Allah knows best.

This indicates uncertainty either way.

And Allah knows best!

This is tough one. The reason is there are sources from both Zaydia and even Sunni sources such as Tabari which say she was happy when Imam Ali (as) passed away. However, did this envy pass on to Imam Ali's (as) sons?

The Sunni sources say once the Ummawis came she prevented the burial due to conflict. This is the second report in Maqatil Al Talibeen.

Also thanks for answering the question. I have seen how your answers have provided a balanced approach in dealing with conflicts between the Sahaba and Ahlul Bayt, so I decided to join this forum and learn more.

No problem!

Yeah, history is always difficult because of the various perspectives and narrations that appear. The fact that so many alternative versions of history exist testifies to the various interests of competing schools of thought.

One thing is clear regarding the actions of A'isha: the unbiased and fair-minded would consider her actions both during the life and after the life of the Prophet, salla Allahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam, to be less than ideal. We know of no other woman in the history of Islam that is as notorious as her. Nor do we know of any other wife who has occupied the minds and hearts of the Muslims as she does even now. Her intentions are, of course, between her and Allah. We can only judge what she outwardly did and said. Her status as a widow of the Prophet does not relieve her of responsibility nor does it excuse her for her misdeeds. We would hope that her repentance is sincere and accepted.

And Allah knows best!
