wa alaikum salam,

The Author (alayhi as salam) of Sharh al-Asas al-Kabeer has clarified the position of the zaydiyya on this matter as follows:

Section: “It is not permissible for a miracle (muʿjiz) to appear at the hands of anyone other than a Prophet.”

Our Imams (of the Ahl al Bayt -alayhim as-salam-) and the Bahshamiyya (meaning Abū Hāshim and his followers) said:
“It is not permissible for a miracle to appear at the hands of anyone other than a Prophet, for if it were to appear at the hands of a non-Prophet, it would result in confusing the truth with falsehood. That is reprehensible, and such confusion is not permissible with respect to Allah, Exalted is He.”

Later in the section he said:

“We replied (to them (who claim that it is possible): All of what has been said about the possibility of miracles appearing at the hands of non-Prophets is nothing but deception of the people and a cause of doubt in confirming the Prophets. For the disbelievers could then say to a Prophet: ‘We will not believe you in your claim of Prophethood, even if you bring a miracle; because someone who claimed divinity (lordship) has also brought a miracle, while he is without doubt a liar. So it may be that your claim is false just as his was.’

And after some discussion he said:

Our Imams alayhim as salam further said: “As for the wonders (karāmāt) of the righteous whether from the People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt) or others such as rainfall descending, the sick being healed, or the swift punishment of a wrongdoer occurring by their supplication these are not miracles for them, even though they are extraordinary occurrences. Rather, they are karāmāt, because the condition of a miracle is absent in them, namely: that it serves as a proof of Prophethood, or that it occurs after a prophetic claim. Rather, these are responses from Allah to their supplications, honoring them and ennobling their sincerity of faith, their obedience to Allah’s pleasure, and their avoidance of satanic impulses. And Allah has promised them response, as He said: {Call upon Me, I will respond to you} [Ghāfir 40:60], and as has come in the report from the Prophet ﷺ. Moreover, there are many great benefits in their occurrence, such as elevating the status of the righteous, protecting them from harm, attracting people to them, increasing acceptance of their teachings of obedience, and deterring people from evil, and other such benefits.”

“Indeed, the karāmāt of the Imams and the righteous are numerous beyond count, manifest and well-known.”

End of Quote.

wa salam
